Fashion Friday | What Should Mom Wear? | Massachusetts Family Photographer

The kids' clothing is easy because they fit into almost any style, and if their outfit is clean, it's almost a guarantee that they look cute. Dad will probably wear his "nice" outfit of khakis, the shirt you tell him to wear, and a good pair of shoes. So, he's all set. But, what about you? What should mom wear for the photoshoot? A couple "of course" tips:

  1. Wear something that you feel comfortable wearing. If you're never going to wear it again, it's probably not something you want to wear in your photos.
  2. Β Try everything on before the shoot, and I mean everything! Socks, bra, jewelry. These photos will be on your walls for a while so you want to love the way you look every time you see them.
  3. Dress for the environment. While hemp is great, that's not what I'm talking about here. Basically, keep the heels at home if we're having a beach session. If we'll be shooting in a field, a long flowing dress would look great!

A few "oh, yeah, good idea" tips:

  1. Accentuate what you love (if you love your collarbones, wear a v-neck shirt and your favorite necklace to help draw attention to them).
  2. Layers rule.
  3. If something gets wrinkled easily, don't wear it.
  4. Don't forget about your fingernails.
  5. Color pop is key.
  6. Accessories can make or break your outfit.

And now, onto a few visual ideas so you can start shopping!

I think this would be perfect for those field photoshoots at sunset:

Photoshoot Clothing Ideas for Mom

I can just picture this one in a few photos where mom and dad sneak off for a few romantic shots:

This one is a little more casual, and I can just picture a little girl wearing a coordinating dress for some cherished mommy/daughter images. Kick off the shoes, and I think it would work on the beach, too:

And, finally, if your jeans are your favorite comfy clothes, I think this is a great way to dress them up for photos:

I hope these ideas get your fashionista juices flowing. As always, if you have any questions about what to wear on your photo shoot with me, I'm more than happy to help. Happy Friday!!!

Fashion Friday | Choosing Clothing for Family Photos | Massachusetts Family and Child Photographer

Even though we are expecting another round of snow here in Massachusetts this weekend, Spring is coming! I can feel it! In just a couple of weeks, we will be turning the clocks ahead an hour, which means longer days, and you know what that means? EVENING PHOTO SHOOTS! CAN'T WAIT! I can also tell that Spring is just around the corner because my calendar for weekend and evening outdoor shoots is starting to bust at the seams. LOVE it! Oh yeah, did you see my Spring Mini Session post? Don't delay if you're interested because I have a feeling they will sell out pretty quickly. Ok, back to the Fashion post. This has to be the question that I get asked the most when it comes to family sessions: WHAT SHOULD WE ALL WEAR?

Instead of making one gigantic post, I'm going to break things up a bit, just so it doesn't get too overwhelming. This is the first in a series of posts that will take you step-by-step on how to choose the best outfits for your family photos.

GUIDELINE #1

Pick a color scheme of 3 colors and stick to it. But how?? You're thinking there are sooooo many colors to choose from and how do I know what goes together?

First, think about where you are going to hang your photos (because you are NOT going to just leave them on the disk you get from me or put the prints in a drawer to hang "later", right?). If you are going to hang them in a big collage on a wall in your living room, look at your wall color, your curtain color, accent piece colors. Then, go over to Design Seeds and plug them in. I usually start with the wall color and see what comes up, which is exactly what I did for the palettes below. Choose which colors most appeal to you and whichΒ  you think look best on your family.

Now, go play around on Design Seeds. Save your color palettes to Pinterest, so you can play along with the next Clothing Guideline for Choosing Clothing for Family Photos that will be posted next week. (Are you following me on Pinterest? If so, share your board with me! I'd love to see what color combinations you come up with.)

Oh, and don't forget, I am here to help! I am more than happy to send you specific outfit ideas based on the location of your session, the formality of your shots, how styled you want your session to be, the colors in the rooms where you will be using your photos, whether it be on your walls or in an album, etc..

Fashion Friday | Photo Shoot Clothing Ideas for Little Girls | Child Photographer Massachusetts

Helping moms (and dads!) choose the clothing for their photo shoots is one of my favorite parts of my job, and when I get to help choose the clothes for a little girl's upcoming session, I get super excited! I love when you ask me for suggestions about what to wear. It means I can truly direct the session creatively and give my clients (YOU!) photos with the look and feel for which they hire me. By the time we get to choosing outfits, we've more than likely already discussed locations. Some outfits will look great in a field, while others, um, not so great. The same goes for the studio; while one outfit might look amazing against a dark grey backdrop, it might look blah against a white backdrop. During your pre-consultation, locations and backdrops are something we will discuss and then we will move onto clothing.

When it comes to clothing for little girls, two big things come to mind: RUFFLES AND LAYERS!

Obviously, you want to dress your daughter in something that reflects her personality. So, if she's a tom-boy, lots of pink and purple ruffles might not truly represent who she is, but a sleek sweater dress layered with a scarf and leggings might be a better fit for her personality. Plus, comfort is a big factor when it comes to great photos! If your little girl is comfortable in the clothes she's wearing, you will see it in the photos.

LOVE the neutral tones and ruffles in these!Massachusetts Child Photographer Worcester Ma Photographer Little Girls Fashion Portraiture

This is perfectly simple and comfy and photographs really well. Love the addition of the dark boots in contrast to the whites.

Don't be afraid to mix patterns. Choose a color from one pattern and make sure it's in the other pattern. Another rule of thumb is to mix the size of the patterns. The thin stripes of the dress perfectly complement the bolder stripes of the scarf.

LOVE the bold mix of the red and white stripes against the mustard sweater. And the additional detail of the glasses is really smart (ha!).

Speaking of details, don't be afraid to add cute belts, bracelets, hats. See how they totally add to the look and feel of this very simple shot?

The deep green color of this dress is a great contrast to the frilly ruffles. Pair this with some leggings, tall riding boots and some really cool bangles, maybe a black shrug, too. This is the perfect example of taking one super-stylized piece and layering it with some basics to make it stand out even more.

I just really like the simplicity of the layers, colors, and textures of this outfit.

More ruffles...And don't forget the shoes! An old pair of sneakers or last year's black patent leather holiday shoes definitely wouldn't fit this style from head to toe.

They add so much more interest than a pair of leggings or tights. Just scroll through the above outfit ideas, and you'll easily see how the different colors, styles, textures, details, etc. can really change the look and feel of the end result. Don't be afraid to tell me what you want your daughter's photos to look like, and I will help you get there. If there isn't a local shop here in Massachusetts, we can definitely go through ideas together online.

Some of my favorite stores/designers for girls' clothing include: Crew Cuts, Matilda Jane, Mini Boden, GAP, ETSY (don't forget all the handmade goodness that's out there!). This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. If you have a little girl, you know that the options are endless. :)

FASHION FRIDAY | COLD WEATHER PHOTOGRAPHY in MASSACHUSETTS

It was about 15 degrees here in Massachusetts when I drove my daughter to school this morning. Of course, I didn't warm up the car because I'm pretty sure the gas light was already on last night when I pulled into the driveway. Woops! Oh well, we burned a few extra calories keeping warm on the ride to school. For most of the winter months, my photography is limited to the indoors because, let's face it, I'm a wimp when it's cold out; HOWEVER, if someone wanted to do an outdoor photo session in the cold I would be more than happy to brave the wind and snow to take your photos. Think about it, if you're a SENIOR, wouldn't it be fun to book a SENIOR SESSION now for photos and have a totally different look than the summer photos everyone else has? And MOMS: when is the last time you had YOUR photo taken...in REAL clothes...WITH makeup?

So, if you're up for it, here are a few outfits that would work perfectly to keep you both warm and stylish!

I love this outfit for a foggy area such as a forest with a bit of snow. I think the neutral colors and baggy sweater would look great against the natural backdrop. You could even throw on a furry hat in a few of the shots to keep things fun while keeping a bit warm!

I think this outfit would look great on location at a farm or barn that is all covered in snow, maybe with some horses outdoors. The non-casual look of it would be a cool contrast to the rusticness (is that a word?) of the fences and trees. Plus, I know a local farm where it would look amazing!

If you wanted to keep things casual and/or not get involved too much with nature, I think this look is really cute, and it looks really comfy, too. I can just picture some really fun shots with this outfit!
