I just photographed this wedding last night, but I couldn't help myself from editing a few of the bride with her bridesmaids as I was uploading and backing up their cards. The color combo was so perfect for their intimate wedding. The light pinks and gold made it soft and romantic, yet luxurious and modern at the same time. The combination is just so gorgeous in photos and in person! If I were to get married again, I'm pretty sure this would be the color palette for my wedding.
Elissa is graduating from Bancroft School in Worcester in just a few short weeks. We had SO MUCH FUN during her session, and I think the photos prove just that. She brought lots of outfits, from casual to dressy, to showcase her fun and laid back personality. Check out these AMAZING photos from her session with me!
Do You Think My Child Could Be A Model? | The Child Model Series, Pt. 1
Photographing children makes up a large portion of my photography business, and I’m happy about that because they are one of my favorite subjects. They’re cute, silly, happy (most of the time); they have clear skin and bright eyes; and they are pretty much open to anything…as in, they haven’t developed much of the self-consciousness that creeps up on us as we grow older.
Do You Think My Child Could Be A Model?
Most of the time during a session my back is turned to the parents as I’m photographing their child, but when I turn around, I see that glimmer of hope and wonder in their eyes as they watch their adorable little one smile perfectly for my camera. They know I shoot a lot of covers for BaystateParent Magazine because they are all over my studio and facebook page, and then they ask, ” Do you think my child could be a model?”
Some things to consider before diving in head first:
- Is your child shy or outgoing?
- Does your child take direction from adults well?
- Does your child really want to model?
- Does your child like having his/her photo taken or do they have a meltdown whenever they see a camera pointed at them?
I only see a child for maybe 45 minutes, so my answer many times is, “Yes, it’s possible that your child could become a model” because it is possible. Anything is possible; however, the bigger question is “Do you really want your child to be a model?”
Do You Really Want Your Child To Be A Model?
The world of modeling seems pretty glamorous, right? Who wouldn’t like traveling to exotic places, wearing beautiful clothing, having your hair and makeup professionally done, and looking your best in every photo? Sounds fantastic, right? It does to me, BUT I’m a grown woman. To a child, much of this doesn’t matter. They are more concerned with when they will get their next snack or be able to play outside.
Many parents love the end result: cute photos of their kids. What they don’t always consider is the behind-the-scenes to achieve those photos. Finding the shoots, scheduling the shoots, setting up the shoots, waiting around the set while everything is perfected, sitting still for hair and makeup, and then cooperating with the photographer after sitting and waiting for so long. It can be a long and tiring day, and many children aren’t cut out for it.
In the beginning, many child models work for free or for very little money. For all of the time that you and your child invest, the monetary payout may not be very much, if anything at all. Many times, you will be spending much more money than you make (think modeling agent, comp cards, travel, etc…all of which I will cover in upcoming segments of this series).
Another factor is do you want your child’s photo everywhere? While it may seem amazing at first, your child’s photo could be in print and all over the internet and social media outlets. In the photography world, there has been a lot of controversy lately over what is appropriate to show of our children. Is the clothing and posing appropriate for their age? In 10 years, will your child have a problem with their photos being on the internet?
All of the above aside, modeling isn’t all bad and can be a very rewarding experience. There certainly is money to be made in the industry. You and your son or daughter may love seeing their modeling photos everywhere, and it may open up other amazing opportunities for them such as commercials, acting, and scholarships. Modeling can also be a great way for your child to discover self-confidence.
Want To Give the Child Model Thing A Try?
One of the biggest pieces of advice that I can give is don’t spend a TON of money on your child’s modeling portfolio in the beginning. If you’ve done any investigating into the world of child modeling, you’ve probably heard about the casting calls where they tell you that your child is PERFECT for them and all you need to do is pay them $3000 and your phone will be ringing off the hook with jobs. NOT TRUE! I will be discussing modeling agencies in a future post, but until then, don’t fall for this scam.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, and you want to test the child modeling waters, BaystateParent Magazine will be holding a Cover Model Contest. You can view all of the details and rules here: Cover Model Search. For just $25, you can get a taste of the child modeling action. I will be the photographer on Friday, April 24, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Mall at Whitney Field, Leominster

As we are approaching the busy photography season, the studio has had a bit of much-needed downtime after the extremely busy holiday season (did I say much-needed???), and I’ve been working on lots of backburner studio projects. The biggest item on my t0-do list was a NEW website and blog! My website was just something that was put together too quickly, and then it lived like that for almost 3 years! The new website is almost done, but it needs a few more tweaks to make it perfect. You can check out the progress, if you like
One thing that I’m extremely excited about is adding more to my blog because that’s where I get to share so much with all of YOU! I absolutely love sharing your images from photo sessions, but there is so much more to share with all of you, too. I get lots and lots of questions from how do I shoot this or when is the best time for our session to how do you find the time, etc. etc. So, the good news is there will be MORE blogging going on around here…all photo goodness relating to the SSP Studio happenings, how-to’s, and maybe even a bit more personal stuff! Yeah!!!
Each Tuesday I will be answering all of those questions that you have pertaining to your upcoming photo shoots, general studio questions, tips to help you prepare for your session, photoshop tricks…pretty much anything! So, if you have any questions that you want answered, please submit them via the contact form so that we’ll be sure to answer.
Weddings are a big deal, right? Right! They deserve their very own category to discuss anything wedding related from photography, timelines, pretty flowers, gorgeous dresses, you name it!
This category is going to be fun! It could be some of my older photos from when I first started the photography business or just a session that never got blogged, some photos of when my daughter was young (awww!), and maybe even some old photos of me! (eeeek!!!! <— now those could be funny!)
Freedom Friday will be when I will write about anything and everything. It could be something from one of the other three categories, it could be a special session that I really want to blog about, a guest post, my favorite music right now, something personal…pretty much anything. I’m giving myself the freedom to post whatever I want on Fridays.
I hope everyone loves what we have in store over the next few months! It’s going to be fun!
Catching up on summer engagement photo sessions!
Ervin was a friend of Esi's brother, and they knew each other growing up. Five years ago, they reconnected and realized they were truly meant for one another. If meeting your true love were as simple as this, nobody would need match.com!
E + E were totally natural in front of the camera. They were relaxed and had fun with their engagement session, and it absolutely shows in their photos, don't you think?
Stay tuned because I'll be posting their wedding at Royal Sonesta in Boston soon!

I'm not quite sure how I got so behind on blogging! This engagement session is from last JUNE!!! And it's just the beginning of about 50% of my sessions from last year that never quite made it to my blog. It's not that I didn't love all of these photo sessions, but things get super crazy from June until December around here. I guess that's a good thing, right? Well, these two are pretty much awesome! They're already married at this point, but that doesn't make their engagement session any less amazing (their wedding was pretty good, too, which you will see once I get to the September 2014 photo archives). Enough babbling...
Emily + Brian brought wine to their engagement session which took place on a perfect late spring afternoon in Massachusetts (I would practically kill for that weather right about now, rather than the 5 ft. of snow on my front lawn!). Good weather + bottle of wine + gorgeous scenery at Stowe Farm...that's probably all I need to say!
I haven't blogged in sooooo very long, but I really need to change that because I have lots and lots of gorgeous images to show you from the past few months. Things were crazy and hectic over the holidays, and I wouldn't change it for anything. I love seeing how families have grown over the past year, and I love meeting new families and photographing them for the first time. What I get to do is such a special thing, and I'm so happy that all of you choose me to capture such amazing memories for you. <3 I've been doing a bunch of lifestyle sessions in some lovely homes lately. It's a bit of a change for me, but I really love it. I love the challenge of a new location and finding different ways to photography people doing what they do everyday and showing how special the seemingly not-so-special moments really are.
